OAE Professional Development Series

The Office for Access and Equity has developed a new Professional Development Series to assist UIC employees in understanding their rights and responsibilities at the university, as well as the services available to them. Each year there will be five sessions covering the topics of sexual harassment, affirmative action/academic hiring, dispute resolution services, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and discrimination/harassment. Please see below for this year's offerings.
  1. Accommodations in Employment and Education under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    Presenters:
    Steve Holz, Office for Access and Equity (OAE)
    Roxanna Stupp, Disability Resource Center (DRC)

    This workshop will discuss the University's obligations under the ADA to provide accommodations for employees and applicants with disabilities, as well as for students with disabilities. Steve will define the interactive process required as part of the compliance process of the ADA and Employee Accommodation Policy and Procedures.  Roxana will review the process required for students with disabilities involving the academic setting including faculty responsibilities.

  2. Preventing and Stopping Harassment in the Workplace

    Presenter:
    Danielle Earls, Title IX and Equity Compliance Specialist, OAE

  3. It is essential that all employees know what constitutes harassment in the workplace and what to do if they experience or witness potentially harassing behavior. This workshop discusses the federal and state anti-discrimination laws and University policies prohibiting unlawful harassment in the workplace. Employees are provided with the tools to recognize conduct and circumstances that can give rise to a claim of unlawful workplace harassment including those which create a hostile work environment. It also discusses the steps to take if one witnesses or experiences harassment at work and assuring that retaliation is prevented once a report or harassment is made.

  4. When Conflict Knocks on the Door…

    Presenter:
    Kathy Irving, Assistant Equity Opportunity Officer, OAE

    Conflict in the workplace is inevitable. This workshop will explore various causes and effects of conflict and will offer practical tips on how to resolve conflicts when they arise in the workplace.  Kathy will highlight services such as Dispute Resolution Services (DRS) and the benefit of private and confidential consultations, facilitations, and mediations.  DRS is the home of 25 trained mediators who assist with resolving conflicts with employees and improving workplace environments.

  5. Know your IX: Faculty and Staff Responsibilities Under Title IX Regulations

    Presenter: Amy Truelove, Title IX Deputy Coordinator and Title IX and
    Equity Compliance Specialist, OAE

    Have you seen the headlines about schools that are being investigated for not responding to sexual assault? Would you be surprised to find out that most staff and faculty who work with students have an obligation to report sexual misconduct to the Title IX coordinator? This workshop will provide an overview of new legal compliance requirements for faculty and staff.

  6. Diversifying your Workforce through Targeted Recruitment Efforts

    Presenter: Keana Galloway, Associate Director, OAE

    Addressing underrepresentation requires continued efforts involving deans, department heads, academic search coordinators, departmental HR contacts and search committees. This workshop will discuss the challenges and benefits of workforce diversity and will provide strategies for increasing diversity through the search process.
